Virtual Reality (VR) is an exploding platform and format to consume videos and play video games.  VR allows users to explore all 360 degrees of an environment with the use of binocular-style headsets. These headsets encompass their field of vision, giving users an expanded viewpoint. As Virtual Reality evolves, consumers will increasingly interact with these computer-generated worlds, presenting undeniable opportunities for brands to pioneer new digital marketing strategies.

Demographics and Prices

Aside from gamers, who is most likely to use virtual reality technology? According to IBB Consulting, VR users tend to be young, male, urban and millennial with an annual income of less than $100,000. For VR content, interest by percentage is segmented into the following areas:

Gaming: 54%

Movies and TV: 49%

Travel and Theme Parks: 40%

Live Sports/Concerts: 27%

User Generated Content: 18%

As with any new technology, there is also a high cost to own VR technology. The current market is being dominated by Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, which offer VR technology at a cost upwards of $800. However, there is a more affordable option offered by Samsung called the Gear VR that is priced at $99. Google is also preparing a low-cost solution with Google Cardboard and YouTube’s YT 360°. Both options will allow users to utilize their smartphone as a screen to offset the cost of additional equipment.

VIRTUAL reality and Influencer Marketing

Currently, the main influencers for VR platforms are YouTube gamers and Twitch streamers such as OMGitsfirefoxx and DanTDM. Because VR is still in its infancy, its applications in influencer marketing are still being explored.  Influencers are starting to experiment with interactive product reviews and live experiences to stimulate interest and engagement across their different platforms that support VR content.

But VR will not be limited to just gamers.  Trending Family is aiming to launch influencer campaigns in content verticals such as travel where VR will allow viewers a more realistic and engaging experience. Cooking tutorials, product reviews, and even live influencer events can incorporate VR, offering unique exposure to brand environments.
